Toilet Training

It is difficult to ever fully toilet train a rat, but you can make it so they mostly go in their litter pan and not as much elsewhere in their cage.

First of all you are going to need a suitable litter pan.

I think a cage corner litter pan that screws onto the side of the cage, like this one from Petbarn for $15, is a must.

Rats love to throw everything in their cage around, so if it isn't nailed down, its going to inevitably end up upside down.

Whether you put litter in the pan is up to you. It can help to reduce the urine smell, though just a sheet of newspaper covering the bottom can also work.

What you need to do is start moving their poos into the pan every time you clean the cage. They will learn eventually that that's where poos go.

Putting a smooth round stone in the litter pan can also help with training them to pee there, especially the males who are driven to mark their territory.
