Lining a rat cage is an act of futility that I still seem to partake in. Every time I clean them out I put down fresh newspaper and blankets, only for them to shred all the newspaper everywhere and make a huge mess (girls more prone to this than boys, they want to make a nest). At least its some enrichment for them?
Do not use wood shavings to line a rat cage. The dust from the shavings will irritate their respiratory tract, causing sneezing or a respiratory infection. Do not use towels as they can get their body parts caught in the threads.
Newspaper and blankets is where is it at. Shredded paper is also good. Could line the bottom with litter if you wanted. Or just put blankets and don't even worry about a newspaper lining.
