Hammocks and Hanging Beds

Hammocks are a rats best friend. They love to sleep up high. They love to stuff their hammocks full of torn up newspaper and food. They love to tear their hammocks apart and pee and poo all over them. If you are going to keep rats, be prepared to be buying a lot of hammocks.

So whats available here in Tasmania? Well Petbarn has this lovely collection as shown below:

These lot range from $12 - $23.

But just because they are fancy, wont stop your rats from tearing them to shreds and ripping out their fuzzy insides within a week of purchase. Though they will tear to pieces whatever you get, its inevitable.

Here's the sort of thing you can find on eBay instead:

These range from around $8 for the silk fluffy ones, up to $24 for the 3 tiered canvas ones. (Just look up rat hammock on ebay)

I would greatly recommend the canvas ones over the silk ones as they are a little bit more durable and less easily chew-able.

There is lots of little hanging beds on eBay as well, but be careful with those, they are often much smaller than they appear and more suitable to mice.

Blankets

Every type of blanket I have tried with my rats has ended up chewed and riddled with holes. Everything from the small fleece ones to a large real thick wool one. It is inevitable that you will probably be replacing blankets every 6 months. So you might as well just buy cheap ones. Just don't use towels, as rats can get caught on the threads.

Beds

Used a bed with my rats maybe once, they dug right into it and ripped it all to pieces. Unlikely to use an actual bed for sleeping as they prefer to sleep up high in their hammocks.

But hey, get one if you want to.
